Market Street Broiler

I recently had some of the best clam chowder I've ever had.
Market Street Broiler in Salt Lake City, Utah boasts of famous clam chowder and a massive list of gluten free choices because of their almost solely fish menu.

I went inside and asked for a GF menu, even though I am not a fish fan, because I figured I'd at least check and see if the clam chowder was safe. You know, for next time.

The hostess told me they didn't have a GF menu because everything was gluten free, minus the bread and pastry desserts.
Whaaaaa?!

I of course had to go sit down and try a bowl right then and there.

I had almost an hour to kill before picking Ryan up and a hot bowl of chowder with a good book sounded positively lovely.

Gluten free clam chowder is pretty hard to come by, at least in the midwest area. It's one of my favorites so I was pretty happy about that. I really did think this version was delicious, but I admittedly felt weird afterwards. Not bad or anything, just a strange gurgly feeling in my stomach. That's the feeling I normally get when I eat gluten, along with a few other symptoms which I didn't get this time around... so I don't know that I recommend it yet. I'll have to try it again soon and see how I feel!

In other news, have any of you honeymooned or vacationed in Hawaii? My Hawaii guest poster for the 50 Nifty United States fell through and it's back on the list of available states again... as is Texas!
Also, my guest post on Mompetition can be found on New Mom in the 'Burbs today!

  1. Yummm! I love clam chowder - we always eat it when we head into San Francisco :) I love the idea behind your blog here (and your travel) - we are wanting to see as much of the states as possible so I'm looking forward to reading about more of your adventures!

    1. I am excited to try some from the coasts. I am sure I'll be able to find all kinds of places that offer it gluten free with FRESH clams! One of my bucket list items is to eat New England clam chowder while in New England... but somewhere on the west coast will work in the meantime! =]
Thank you, I so appreciate that and I'm glad to have you!

  2. Soooooo jealous. Although, I had clam chowder for Christmas that my dad made, so I'm good. I just need to get his recipe and make it soon! I'll pass it on to you when I get it. Hopefully next time you go you won't feel weird!

    1. Oh thank you, that would be lovely!
And I know, I was just thinking that too. I'd like to become a regular there ha ha. ;]

  3. As a midwesterner, I can't believe they didn't have so many gluten free options and didn't advertise it. That is not easy to come by! And if no one has already taken the spot, I went to Hawaii last June and would gladly write about it.

    1. I know! But I shouldn't be surprised because I honestly never find any gluten free options unless I go into "normal" restaurants and ask. All the time I'll hear "Oh yeah, we have a full menu" and think, "Why wouldn't you put up a sign!?"
And nobody has Hawaii yet so it is all yours! I'll goo look for an e-mail address on your blog. =]

  4. I can't believe the whole restaurant was GF except for those few items! THAT's AMAZING! I don't think that we have restaurants like that around here, but I know my GF friends would love that.
