PhoBookClub Read: The Book Thief

The March book will be Winter Garden by Kristen Hannah, which takes place in Russia. It's another one I've heard nothing but wonderful things about and have been excited to check out for a while!

This month we read The Book Thief, another World War II book. This one took place in Molching, Germany which is near Munich.
I'll provide a short spoiler-free review below, and then if you've read the book you can join in the discussion in the comments section.

I really, really liked this book. I had heard a lot of great things and was in the mood for another World War II book after having read Sarah's Key so when I found it at Barnes & Noble I had to use my gift card and get it. I'm so glad I did!

This is the story of Liesel and her family and all of the things that go on around them during a dangerous time around the Holocaust. It's one of those books I just couldn't put down and felt so much while reading. It was upsetting, funny, happy and sad. I loved the descriptions and characters, loved just about everything about it and most definitely recommend it.

    2. I thought it was so unique! I've never read a book like that and it put a 'personality' to death in a way.

  2. Sometimes when a book has as many awards and as much recognition as this one, I wind up feeling disappointed and feeling like it doesn’t live up to all the hype. Do you think this one did?

  3. I got the impression that Germany is a cool, cloudy, rainy place from this book. Did you? If you’ve ever visited, what was the weather like?

    1. I got that impression as well, which is different from the one I had of fast highways and lots of beer. I've never been, though.

  4. I’ve mentioned before that I’m learning German. I really liked that this book taught me a few new vocabulary words. Do you know of any other books that give you many new words in another language?
I remember liking the Josephina books in the American Girl series and Esperanza Rising for their mini Spanish lessons as a kid.

    1. I liked those American Girls series as well! I know of many books that add other languages, but I can't think of the specific titles right now. Doh!
